NWP calibration applied to Aeolus Mie channel winds

چکیده

Aeolus is the first Doppler wind lidar (DWL) to measure profiles from space. an ESA (European Space Agency) explorer mission with objective retrieve winds collected atmospheric return signal which result of Mie and Rayleigh scattering laser-emitted light by molecules particulates. The focus this paper on retrieved instrument channel data, that is, originating aerosols clouds. use simulated data numerical weather prediction (NWP) models a widely accepted proven concept for monitoring performance many meteorological instruments, including Aeolus. Continuous against model European Centre Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has revealed systematic errors in winds. Following reverse engineering approach, could be traced back imperfections calibration tables serve as input on-ground processing algorithms. A new algorithm, denoted NWP calibration, makes generate updated table. It shown making NWP-based show reduced errors, not only when compared but also independent dataset very-high-resolution aircraft data. latter gives high confidence algorithm does introduce model-related into Based presented results paper, table, part level-2B processing, become operational chain since 01 July 2021.

ASCAT-B NWP Ocean Calibration and Validation

On September 17, 2012 the Metop-B satellite with onboard the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT-B) has been successfully launched. For the ASCAT-B scatterometer, corrections are derived with the use of the NWP ocean calibration (NOC). These corrections are used in the ASCAT wind data processor in order to obtain high-quality winds. The NOC-calibrated ASCAT-B wind product is examined and its quality ...

The performance of Aeolus in heterogeneous atmospheric conditions using high-resolution radiosonde data

The European Space Agency Aeolus mission aims to measure wind profiles from space. A major challenge is to retrieve high quality winds in heterogeneous atmospheric conditions, i.e. where both the atmospheric dynamics and optical properties vary strongly within the sampling volume. In preparation for launch we aim to quantify the expected error of retrieved winds from atmospheric heterogeneity, ...

Calibration and Validation of ASCAT Winds

Based on the OSI SAF cone visualisation tools at KNMI and the NOC corrections, calibration of the ASCAT scatterometer is checked. In this report we describe and evaluate level 1b corrections to the operational L1b ASCAT backscatter data version PPF740 as provided by EUMETSAT based on their three transponder calibration campaign. For the left mid antenna an offset in ocean calibration results ha...

Automatic Camera Calibration Applied to Medical Endoscopy

We present a calibration algorithm for cameras with lens distortion, that uses a single image of a planar chessboard pattern acquired in general position. The radial distortion is modeled using the first order division model, and the method provides a closed form estimation of the intrinsic parameters and distortion coefficient. The experimental evaluation shows that the calibration accuracy is...
